Principal's Message

Dear Panther Nation:

On behalf of the staff at Fifth Ward Elementary School, I am happy to welcome you to the 2020 – 2021 school year. We are looking forward to working together to ensure your child achieves his/her highest potential. We recognize, to be successful in school, our staff and children need support from home, the community and school. We know that strong partnerships will have a great impact on your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for our students’ success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out that responsibility.

As we all know, last school year was an unprecedented one in the history of our educational system. In reaction to the COVID-19 Global Pandemic, we closed our building to normal activity (traditional learning model) and moved to an all virtual learning model. We learned a great deal about how students learn and plan to utilize the best instructional strategies no matter the model.

Even though we were not able to fully test all students using the LEAP2025 state assessments, we are honored to report the following:

Our English Language Learners were tested on their proficiency in the English language.

80% of students showed growth toward their projected learning targets. Moreover, 20% of these students exceeded their learning targets. The remaining 20% of students maintained their learning of the English language. No student regressed!

Our Connector students were testing on Louisiana Student Standards (LSS).

100% of students scored ADVANCED!

I am elated with the results and hope to build on our past successes to continue to improve student achievement. In doing so, we must stay true to our new vision statement.

Our vision is to develop a culture of teaching and learning where students receive high-quality,

standards-based instruction and have the opportunity to thrive in a just, fair and caring learning environment. As a result, students will be able to transition efficiently to middle school.

Sincerely,

Dr. Brandy Turner, Principal
